Now you’re cookin’ — With Gas ?

We had an interesting experience on Friday when a client approached us quite vexed. Seems he’s in the construction business with field offices in New York State and had heard something about a “Gas Ban” in New York. “Are you serious ?!?”

Unfortunately yes.

In an ultimate folly of insanity, various municipalities are considering banning not only gas stoves but also gas water heaters and furnaces. Now, one might consider some merit in areas exceptionally prone to earthquakes and other natural disasters which could fracture pipelines but THIS ‘gas ban’ was in no such region. What’s up ?

It’s environmental marxism; simply one more incremental step towards controlling all energy use of a population (and as you well know EVERYTHING is energy–except in fission or fusion reactions– matter cannot be created or destroyed; only changed in form. This reaches ALL aspects of EVERYONE’S life). Of course, banning a gas stove (or attempting a ‘de facto’ ban by establishing arbitrary and baseless standards) is nuts; people have been cooking on gas burners for years and ANY new gas burner is far superior in efficiency to any used by our ancestors for centuries. While reckless use of an unvented gas stove can generate unacceptable levels of carbon monoxide when used to heat a home, this hazard has been known for centuries as well. Moreover, most modern homes are equipped with CO detectors to warn of this hazard (something definitely NOT available a few decades ago). In fact, one of our founders’ chemistry teacher used plain old bunsen burners to warm up the classroom before class and HE (and his classmates) somehow survived unscathed.

According to the miscreants perpetrating this fraud, it’s to address the ‘climate change’ hoax. As such, we put one of our operatives on the case to do a basic scientific analysis of the situation:

“Well, it’s fraud and can’t be anything else. On all levels. Moreover, the perps can’t claim ignorance–they know better.

Let’s look at a gas furnace. Modern gas furnaces are anywhere between 80 and 95 percent efficient at converting NATGAS to heat. Water heaters have similar efficiency as do cookstoves. AND gas cooking burners tend to provide more even and instantaneous heat compared to their electric counterparts–one of the reasons most chefs prefer them for epicurean endeavors.

Take a thermal unit of NATGAS. If it’s burned at the house or restaurant, you’re going to effectively convert between 80 and 95% of the thermal unit of energy to direct heat. So it’s relatively efficient. On the other hand, if you burn that same thermal unit at a power plant, only around 50% of it leaves the plant converted into electricity. A simple unbeatable fact from the second law of thermodynamics. And MOST new electricity capacity IS NATGAS.

When you allow for transmission and distribution of the electricity to the electric range or cooktop you’re down around 40-45 percent efficiency. Meaning that rather than having a device that converts 80-90 percent of the gas input into something useful, you’re down around 40-45 percent by using electricity. Effectively DOUBLING whatever emissions you had before. That’s because rather than burning the gas efficiently onsite, you have to convert it via a heat engine into electricity, transmit it, and then convert it back into heat. Losing around half of the energy in the process–most of which is heat rejected at the power plant.

Now, I might give the politicians and secretary of the DOE a pass if they were just plain stupid. But they’re not; they are highly educated with highly educated staff. So it MUST be corruption.”

We think she’s spot on. And are actively developing strategies to thwart these insane laws for our clients. Just as we helped them drill out their shower flow restrictors (which were mandated to restrict shower water use by plebians while elitists would happily dump 10,000 gallons of water on their lawn two or three times a week to keep their grass green).

So if you’re looking for a way around these corrupt miscreants, feel free to give us a shout. No need to be vexed when you have the good folks at Diatomaceous-Johnson to come up with REAL solutions !
