It’s a recurring theme at D-J of how we advise clients to recognize the blatant use of rhetoric and propaganda. Certainly in the past we’ve debunked “gun violence,” “gun crimes,” “assault weapons,” “weapons of war,” “lockdowns,” “military style firearms,” and thousands of other manipulative terms. We strongly advise clients to avoid using MSM driven buzzwords in that one of the first impressions it makes to a thinking person is the person espousing it is unable to think for himself.
It was funny when Bernie Sanders and AOC abandoned their “Ogliarchy” push. It wasn’t because they were lying (they were) and the concept was completely made up; it was because most people had no idea what “Ogliarchy” meant—at least before they looked it up on the internet. Willie Stark (Talos) at least learned how to frame rhetoric in “All the King’s Men” (an excellent read by RP Warren; if you’re going to watch the movie instead we’d suggest the Broderick Crawford version). At one time the MSM was good at it; with the internet and degradation of traditional press outlets, the MSM has been relegated to Amateur night. Fortunately most of the American public (through education and striving to obtain information for themselves) has gotten wise and realized just because someone is handsome or pretty (and speaks well) the message they send isn`t necessarily correct.
One of our Principals heard the term ‘gerrymandering’ spouted by no less than the governor of Illinois. After she got done laughing, she asked for some time to talk to our loyal clients:
”I was watching “Jeopardy” perhaps a decade ago and one of the answers was “Gerrymandering”. At the time I had no idea ! As I remember the answer was “What is changing around political districts to satisfy political ambitions.”
The dictionary definition is essentially the same; it can be really any agenda — but it’s redisticting to establish some sort of advantage. States are and have been free to do this; the law delegates any practice of electoral districting (rightly) to the respective state legislatures. They can district as they see fit and it’s constitutionally (and legally) valid.
The actual practice is named after Governor Eldridge Gerry of Massachusetts who in 1812 convinced the state legislature to redistrict according to his party’s agenda (the Democratic-Republicans who opposed the Federalst party). And has been done since then by all parties in all states.
Constitutionally, there’s absolutely nothing that can be done about the process; our Constitution is quite clear in leaving districting (and electoral votes for that matter) at the pleasure of the state legislature. While some leftists might snipe at the edges when the process doesn`t go their way (claiming racism or other idiocy) the Constituion overrides it. The founders—believing that state legislatures would hold the lion’s share of the power and reflect the will of the people—left it up to them. So for those bleating I’d suggest you be VERY active in YOUR state elections and for whom gets elected state house representative and state senator.
What made the coffee hit the screen was when I learned that Texas Democrats had turned tail and run away to Illinois to attempt to block a vote regarding redistricting in Texas (trying to block legislature action due lack of a quorum).
Illinois is one of the most Gerrymandered states in our union; second only to California. There’s a reason ‘Chicago Politics’ is notorious. So the attempted Gerrymanders run to the Gerrymanders. And then bleat over complicit MSM of how they’re doing ‘heroic things’ while being wholly AWOL from their post. Unable to make a case, they cut and run trying legal tricks and grandstanding over complicit MSM to dupe the public.
Rightfully, Governor Abbot and the house demanded their return and gave them a deadline to fulfill their legal obligations. They breached their oath to the people of Texas and violate Texas law. Not surprisingly, they demanded safe harbor in a state with a strong history of violating the Constitution and the law (it’s no coincidence that most Illinois governors of recent history have wound up as Federal Felons, or that Illinois is a fiend to the right to keep and bear arms; also not surprising that the gerrymandered district of Chicago tends to drive the governor and legislature — and has the highest degree of crimes committed with firearms in the nation).
There’s political rhetoric surrounding this all over with sensationalism driven by the media. The solution isn’t that hard. While legal recourse should be pursued against legislators who abandon their post (effectively disenfranchising democratic process of their electorate), there’s no doubt such cowards are unfit to govern.
So while I urge governmental option to prosecute them happen, the REAL solution is they be divested of their post immediately. To do anything else encourages bad behavior and endorses a ‘cut and run’ strategy. I’m confident that any rational court will quickly adjudicate willful abandonment of post equivalent to relinquishing that post (like secession of congressmen during the civil war), and allow continuance of business with whatever individuals remain (the appropriate majority constituting a quorum). Normal business in special session can continue and the redistricting will undoubtedly occur. I encourage the leadership remaining in Texas to make that happen. This isn’t about a congressman in Texas getting sick; it’s a willful abandonment of post and failure to represent those who elected them in good faith. It’s horrible and an affront to democracy.
—Keshawdra Johnson.”
We thank Keshawndra for her spot on remarks and hope those remaining in Texas take her words to heart. We can’t have public servants who at the first hint of trouble or difficulty cut and run like scared rats.
Here, here! The pearl clutching over this is absurd. I’m constantly in awe at how, in 2025, these narratives that *insert issue here* is a new and reckless assault on *insert principle here* continue in quick succession. As you rightly point out, we’re over 200 years in on the districting approach.
Politicians are scumbags. The end. The media are lackeys for scumbags. People need to read a book, go outside, and get a clue.
